10 Me Alone
A hope to hear my prayer / But who's knocking / Who's watching / Who's listening / Who's with me / I lift my head and no one's there...
My sister, Adrienne Harris, wrote the original words and music for "Me Alone" as a way of processing her experience as a nurse managing a COVID ward at the height of the first wave of the pandemic. Like much of this album’s content, the lyrics could be interpreted in multiple ways, but here references like “unmask to take a breath” give a clear view to the song’s literal meaning.
This triptych by The Collective NHV features an individual plunged in darkness. Look closely into the abyss and trace the outline of the subject's head and torso. The blur of the signature red visor gives a clue that the subject, like the imperiled cyborg Ionne, has been changed by external forces. The subject morphs and splits in two. Ironically, the duplicates are rendered with more clarity and focus their solo original, although they are still greatly concealed.
What did you learn about yourself during the isolation of lockdowns and physical distancing? In what ways did the experience increase your clarity?
Me Alone
This world repeats itself
Are we nowhere?
And masks to take a breath
And no one's there
Just me alone
Oooh
Just me alone
Oooh
It's just life, it's just empty cells
Someone save me
I'm too tired, too much to bear
Just rest, don't speak
A hope to hear my prayer
But who's knocking
who's watching
Who's listening
Who's with me
I lift my head and no one's there
Just me alone
Oooh
Just me alone
Oooh
